The Monfort Quad at Colorado State University is handsomely framed on all sides with large Honey Locust trees and features almost no landform. These elements combine to make the quad an appropriate setting for large gatherings and speaking events. President Obama gave a speach in the Monfort Quadrangle at CSU in the fall of 2012 to an audience of over 13,00 supporters.
The design challenge for this project was to reimagine the space with introduced landform and perfectly balanced cut and fill.
The design concept for this proposal is a natural ampitheater that naturally organizes large audiences during speaking events and forms an attractive outdoor study room at all other times. When the sun is out, Monfort Quad is a popular meeting spot for people across campus. By orienting the landform to face directly south students can take advantage of the sun’s warm rays in a comfortable outdoor environment.
